When it comes to our house cleaning regime most of us haven’t given too much thought to including our mattresses. Yet the unpleasant consequences of their neglect should not be ignored.
Your mattress can hold between 90,000 to 10 million dust mites that feed off our dead skin cells. This is because we spend so much time lying down, 25 years in an average lifetime.
The real issue here is not the mites but their faecal matter, a major source of allergens. This can have a detrimental effect on your health, particularly if you have a pre-existing respiratory illness.
To ensure your mattress is as contaminant free as possible it should be sanitised annually or every 6 months if you have a respiratory condition.
The best way to sanitise your mattress is to have it professionally steam cleaned. This process is the ideal chemical free, eco – friendly solution for tackling dust mite nests.
Extremely hot water is used to sanitise your mattress, drying quickly and thereby reducing the chances of cross contamination, whilst being free of chemicals that can themselves cause further irritation.
Please be aware that as a rule this process is not suitable for memory foam. You should always refer to your mattress user guide if you have one.
